Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

This small prayer is towards the close of the larger Compline Prayer (and often used in Evening Prayer), too. These prayers are a part of The Daily Office in both the Anglican and Episcopalian traditions. When I get to this part of praying through Compline, I practically weep. The words in this particular prayer are so powerful, probably because we all fall into one of these categories, or perhaps even more than one. I've wanted to make this into a printable for so long...but a recent gift spurred me to do so.

Evening Prayer Printable

My husband bought me this book, Prayer in the Night, by Tish Harrison Warren for Mother's Day. And I haven't been able to put it down! Ironically, I realized through the first chapter that I knew the author from our high school days. 

But, this book is really wonderful. I have prayed Evening Prayer for some time, but my friend, Jeanine, introduced me to Compline when we roomed together at a church retreat last summer. We prayed it together one night before bed and I was hooked. I dove deeper into it this past Lenten season and have continued praying it at the end of (almost) every day. 

The Compline prayer (found in the Book of Common Prayer) includes a confession of sins, one or more psalms, a short reading from scripture, verses and responses, the Lord's Prayer, collects which ask for God's protection during the night to come, and a few other tidbits. There is also a time of silence, along with intercessions and thanksgivings. One of the closing prayers is the one I've made into a printable here.

Today's design is super simple, but I intended that. I wanted the words to really be special. I also gave it a bit of an antique-feel with the fonts and display lettering used. I wanted it to look like a prayer you'd see framed in your great Aunt's house. ;)

• The 5x7" PDF design comes with two designs per page so its letter-sized page can easily be printed at home without paper waste. You'll have one to keep and one to share.
• 8x10" JPEG and PDF
• The PDF designs work perfectly for at-home printing. 
• The JPEGs can easily be uploaded to places like Walgreens, Staples, FedEx Office, etc. for professional printing (it's not too expensive, either). I use Walgreens for my larger printables in my own home. I upload on their site and just pick up in my local store.
• If you are printing at home, make sure to use white, letter-sized cardstock for both the 8x10" and 5x7" PDF designs. 
• You can grab a pack of white, letter-sized cardstock here on Amazon. It produces much higher quality results than regular paper.
