I first laid eyes on a wooden dough bowl when I stayed at my (then, soon-to-be) in-law's home for the first time. My mother-in-law had a lovely vintage dough bowl on her kitchen table with lots of nostalgic pretties piled inside of it. It was so neat! I was then determined to find a dough bowl of my own. See how I style my own wooden dough bowl, throughout the year, below.

My Wooden Dough Bowl
I've decided to give away my oblong wooden dough bowl. I have multiple dough bowls, but this is definitely one of the best ones. It is a great (larger) size and perfect to use in your own home. It fits into multiple decor styles, too, making it easy to integrate in your own space. Our yearly give away is unique in that we're all giving away our personal stuff from our own homes (perfect for closet-clean out season, amiright?).
And just a warning, at one point I had a few glittery ornaments in this dough bowl, and I see a few shimmers here and there. So, I'm gifting you a few flecks of glitter, too. You'll thank me later, I'm sure. Also, this particular wooden dough bowl is a reproduction. I found it at one of my favorite antique stores, Finds of All Kinds, in Burnet, Texas several years ago.

9 Ways to Style a Wooden Dough Bowl
If you already own a dough bowl, you know they're fun (and simple) to style, especially seasonally. Below, I'm sharing some of my personal favorite items to fill my dough bowls. None of them are expensive...and some are even free.
1. Sea Shells (or similar collectibles)
When we visit the beach, my husband collects sea shells. They make for the best, budget-friendly souvenirs ever. I enjoy seeing all of them on display together, as well. Whether you have a coastal-style of decor, or just want to add some natural elements to your home, sea shells are always a great choice and look especially lovely against the texture of a wooden dough bowl. It makes for a very organic and lovely display of natural items.
2. Fresh Fruit or Vegetables
In my kitchen, I try to keep a big bowl of fruit out and ready for my family to grab at any time of the day (and they definitely do!). A wooden dough bowl is such a lovely vessel for your produce that you keep out in the open. I have also kept onions, garlic, and potatoes in their own dough bowl at times, too. It makes them easy to reach for when I'm prepping food and cooking a meal.
3. Bottle Corks
Corks from wine or champagne are another free decor item. I have a relative who has deep glass front drawers in her kitchen (the kind you display dry beans and such inside). She has one drawer that is full of corks. I always thought it was such a neat display. And my dough bowl is a great vessel since I don't have glass drawer fronts. To me, corks are other little pieces of memories. If my family has a bottle of wine at a restaurant, we'll ask for the cork, too. That way, we can remember the occasion. I think a wooden dough bowl full of corks would be a great dining room centerpiece. Maybe even add in some pillar candles, too?
4. Yarn Pom Poms
I love displaying yarn pom poms...especially in the winter time (they *almost* mimic snowballs to us Texans). I prefer to make my own, too. Be sure to check out my tutorial on How to Make Yarn Pom Poms. They're quite addictive once you start making them. I think the texture of the yarn looks great against the wood back drop of the dough bowl.
5. Spools of Thread
In my craft room, I keep my mother's vintage thread spools out on display (I try not to use them too terribly much, since they're really more of a keepsake to me). For the amount of spools I have, a dough bowl is a great place to keep them. They're a great centerpiece when my craft table is actually empty, too (although, that's rare!). But, I do enjoy the bowl full of colorful thread.
6. Pine Cones
In the fall and winter seasons, nothing beats pine cones as natural decor. Use my tutorial for How to Make Scented Pine Cones, too. These will be a lovely enhancement to your home, especially inside your dough bowl.
7. Eggs
In the springtime, I haul out my fake egg collection to display. It's *somewhat* organic, but doesn't have to be watered or tended to every day. I painted a few of my eggs for some fun contrast. And they really POP inside the bowl.
8. Wooden Hearts
Not just for Valentine's season...I love to display hearts all the time. I painted these wooden ones in the hues of my living area. I purchased my wooden hearts to paint here on Amazon.
9. Ornaments
And of course, during the holiday season, I fill my wooden dough bowl full of glass ornaments. I try to keep them in the same colors as my living area. Most of the above ornaments all came from thrifting, too. That made them super budget-friendly. Not only are they lovely in a dough bowl, but pretty in a glass hurricane, too (see how I did that on my Christmas Mantel this past year). And below, see how I mixed both ornaments and pine cones together a couple of Christmases ago. I love all of the fun textures that look created.

It's hard to top what you've done with it but since it's winter I am thinking snow and cold . . . maybe glittery white frosted evergreen pieces with pine cones and glittery snowflakes and three white candles.

Right now I have unshelled nuts in my dough bowl, along with a nutcracker. My grandmother always had unshelled nuts during the holidays and, while we're a little past the holiday season, I hate to take them out. They remind me of Granny so much! Next, for Valentine's Day, I'll put in rag balls in reds and pinks and whites.

ReplyDeleteI would have this gorgeous bowl on my dining table as my center piece and put in it glitter painted pine cones for now. It's cold and not much sun, so I want to bring bright and glitter in. When the sun is out more, spring time-ish, I would love to put flower tops and leaves in the bowl - as much color as I can get.

Thank you for offering your lovely dough bowl, it is perfect for my creation of a several preserved boxwood balls in the bowl, both elegant and lends a touch of color to the perfect spot. I would place this on my buffet table and style it with some wooden thick candlesticks, a pretty tiered pedestal dish and the dough bowl. I love this bowl and the possibilities are endless!

ReplyDeleteI love these ideas! I do set out a ceramic bowl and do something similar, but this dough bowl would be longer and I could put more in it. ;). However, I would place this one on our hutch and decorate it seasonally. I would incorporate some natural elements such as pine cones, magnolia leaves, and maybe pine boughs for the winter (maybe sprayed with some fake snow, since I live in Alabama where we get little snow) along with some plastic glittered snowflakes. ReplyDeleteThis is just beautiful. At first I thought I knew EXACTLY what I would do with it - thinking lemons and herbs, but then I saw the other ideas and now my mind is full - hard to decide for sure, but as spring is approaching (hopefully) I'd probably look towards fruits and greenery.

This dough bowl would have a place of distinction on my coffee table and would be seasonally decorated with many items from nature. Love this beautiful bowl! I would use it as a centerpiece on my dining room table. The first thing that comes to mind, is some white candles, a snowman figure and some fake snow!
ReplyDeleteIt would fit perfectly between my bathroom sinks in my master bath. I would but hand towels and wash cloths in it. My mother has one that belonged to my grandmother. It is over 100 years old. (Been trying to talk her into giving it to me for years :)

ReplyDeleteIf I would be lucky enough to win this treasure, I think during the spring and summer months I would keep lemons, artichokes and greenery in it. In the fall, white pumpkins for sure! During Christmas, white ceramic houses with white twinkle lights in them surrounded by bottle trees with white lights and christmas greenery with red berries around the edges....for winter, a simple array of winterberry sprigs, birch branches, pinecones and timer candles in the middle. For the summer, I'd use shells. In the fall, pine cones and dried seed heads. For winter, delicate ornaments with fake snow and miniature nutcrakers.

I would fill it with my mom's thread spools (old wooden style/new with thread mixed).Her mom had an old dough bowl she used to mix biscuits with and she used it so much that she wore a hole in the bottom of it, my mom had a lot of memories of that bowl. ReplyDeleteI love this dough bowl! I would decorate it with seasonal and holiday items. Christmas would be with artificial greens, a white battery operated candle and mini balls. Winter-The candle, white artificial branches and pine cones.Easter-with a ceramic chicken in the center and mini eggs around it. Spring-Pastel flowers with a small sign "Spring Has Sprung" sin in the middle. Summer-Some driftwood.seashells, and sea glass. Fall and Thanksgiving- a ceramic turkey with artificial colored leaves. For all Patriotic holidays, a mixture of the many red, white and blue items I have collected over the years.

ReplyDeleteFirst off, I LOVE the many ideas provided for the dough bowls. We, my fiancee and I, are revamping our kitchen. We live in an older home and the cabinets and walls are real wood which I love, but I'd like some pops of color in as well. I'd probably use the dough bowl for breads, etc. I also have TONS of corks and love the look of those on the bowl as well. oh my I just absolutely love your blog! and all that you share, this dough bowl is a beauty. so many choices, I would be hard pressed to decide whether it would sit on the entry table for keys and glasses and bits and pieces, or on my craft table for yet more bits and pieces, or decorative seasonal things...I am thinking it would be moved around a very bowl at my house! thanks for all you do!

DeleteI do not know what happened to my mother's dough bowl, or enamel pan that replaced it for my childhood biscuit memories. This one is almost identical. I would display it with candles, pine cones,and (silk, I live in AZ now), magnolia blossoms and leaves. For the holidays, my collected glass ornaments would replace the magnolias.

I would use the dough bowl on my hearth and fill it with balls of yarn in my family room's colors. At Christmas I would stage it with ornaments and pine cones (of which I have an abundance). I love all of your ideas.

We have a collection of encouragement, spread kindness, pay it forward, love, fortune, blessed and thankful for- type notes on colored paper. Whatever we can think of that will make us, and hopefully others, smile. Kind of like fortune cookies or a gumball machine, you never know what you'll get when you pick one. Fall would be a collection of acorns from our 200 year old oak tree at my mom's, winter would be pine cones my daughter and I collected, spring would be "moss balls", speckled eggs, and dogwood blooms, and summer my dried hydrangea flowers!

ReplyDeleteI love dough bowls. I remember when my Mom actually made biscuits out of hers. I think I would use the dough bowl to change with the seasons. But for everyday use, I would put nuts and a nutcracker in it and leave it on the bar for my family to have a quick snack.

I have wanted a dough bowl for such a long time! I go to the thrift stores here and never find one. I am like you, addicted to holiday decorating, well everything decorating... lol. I decorate every room for holidays. I have many ideas for this bowl. Right now for Winter I would have painted with white touches on pinecones and evergreen branches in it with a few snowflakes. ReplyDeleteI recently acquired my first dough bowl & I just love it! Christmas was the first season that I used it. I filled it with greenery & twinkle lights for the Christmas holidays. When I put my Christmas decorations away, I filled it with pine cones & a little bit of cinnamon potpourri to keep that yummy holiday smell going. I'm looking forward to decorating with it in every season!

ReplyDeleteI love to decorate according to the seasons, but I would also put fun things in it! For Christmas, a big bag of Lindt balls showing all the pretty foil colors or candy wrapped in pretty foil colors. For dessert, cupcakes or cake pops or candy apples would be a fun treat display also. If I was making Chinese food for instance, then I would put a bowl of pineapple chunks in the middle and fortune cookies around it. It all depends what I'm cooking.
If my 5 grands want to make smores, than I would put in a bag of marshmallows, a bunch of chocolate bars, honey and chocolate graham crackers in that beautiful dough bowl.
I would also put my frozen slices of bundt and angel food cake in the bowl, b4 the kids come over with their friends and leave the big freezer door open way to long! Lol. They only live 3 streets down from my house, so I often get surprise visits, which I love!
If we have a game board night or watch a movie, I'm sure they will think of something yummy or fruit bc drinks stay on the dining room table. My best friend, that was murdered years ago, helped me pick out my livingroom furniture a month b4 she went to heaven!
If making cut out cookies or another kind of cookie or gingerbread house, then I would gather up all the sprinkles and all the different kinds of chips, candy, etc to put in that big dough bowl.
On Halloween night I would lend it to my Sister bc she has alot of trick or treaters that come to her house. That oblong dough bowl would be perfect and easier for the little hands to choose what candy they want.
The possibilities are just endless with this big beautiful dough bowl, that I could go on and on bc I just thought about more things to put in your dough bowl.
It just amazes me seeing all your wonderful crafts that you made on your blog!

ReplyDeleteSo many of the things you put into your bowl are charming and great ideas and I'd love to follow your path but I know our cats--one in particular--would like nothing better than to toss the contents onto the floor. So I think I would likely stick to fresh fruit, which I think serves a dual purpose of always looking good and fresh *and* encouraging me to snack on that rather than thinking, "Where are those cookies?"

ReplyDeleteI have a plethora of ideas on how to style the bowl. In my classroom, as a marker holder. In my office as aa inspirational quote holder. When in need of inspiration, grab one out. Each inspiration could be on a card, a wooden cutout, the back of a photo, anything desired. In my kitchen it would be fruit. During holidays it could be a variety such as wooden hearts painted conversational hearts, shamrocks with Irish blessings, pictures of mom or cards to write tell mom why you love her, the same for Dad or even old fishing lures. For birthdays, party favors or fun photos celebrating them. The ideas go on as I only mentioned a few. Just let your imagination flow.

It's BEAUTIFUL! I would use it as a fruit bowl when not doing a seasonal decoration just so I could keep it out and visible all the time! Seasonally I'd use it with candles, pine cones and ornaments at Christmas. Pumpkins in the fall and add Indian corn and candles for Thanksgiving, Hearts, flowers and baubles for Valentines, Easter eggs, some bunnies and moss for Easter... I would use a dough bowl to put some Valentine's Day decor in and for the summer time maybe some shells since I live at the beach. I would love to have a dough bowl for decoration since I use mine for biscuits.

ReplyDeleteWell, at Christmas time it would be filled with vintage Christmas ornaments that used to belong to my parents and grandparents. The rest of they year, most likely with pinecones, gourds, and mini pumpkins.
ReplyDeleteI would put a glass cloche over it or a wire one that I have and inside I would do seasonal decorations and include a flameless candle or fairy lights. Maybe some spagham moss on the outside of the cloche to balance the overall look.
