These 19 Fun Cursive Fonts are free and fantastic. Since cursive fonts are so versatile, these work for a variety of projects. From printables to crafts to vinyl cutting, you'll definitely find a great use for all of these fun cursive fonts. I've also included some simple font pairing tips with a few of these, as well.
Well, it's definitely no secret that I love a good free font. But, my favorites are definitely the fun cursive fonts. When I started learning cursive as a kid, I was actually quite obsessed with perfecting my handwriting. By eighth grade, I had mastered my penmanship, which was a bit of script and print mixed into one. My 13-year-old self thought I had reached the pinnacle of handwriting perfection. I think my obsession with my own handwriting lead to an overall fascination with fonts, as well. And of course, the cursive ones have my heart, completely. Putting together this grouping of fun cursive fonts may have been my favorite thing, ever. Download my favorite fun cursive fonts below.
Free Cursive Fonts
In this day and age, I think the term cursive can sometimes feel a bit stuffy...like it's the penmanship of our ancestors. But, I'm so happy it appears to be making its comeback (our state is actually bringing it back into the classroom...hooray!). But cursive lettering doesn't have to look dowdy or old-fashioned in any way (although, I do love that aspect of it, too). Below, I have rounded up 19 of my favorite FUN and FREE cursive fonts. Because script letters can be the life of a party, too. I'm also sharing download and installation tips for all of these script-y pretties.
How to Download these Fun Cursive Fonts
- All of these free cursive fonts listed out below are available via DaFont. I've linked each font directly to its download page on their site.
- Once you click through to their site, you will click the button that says 'download' on the right side of the page.
- Once you have downloaded your font, you'll need to unzip the file.
- On a PC, right-click to select 'Extract All', and then follow the instructions.
- On a Mac, double click the zipped file and the file(s) will automatically unzip.
Installing Your Fun Cursive Fonts
- I've been a loyal Mac user for over 20 years. Sadly, I couldn't begin to tell you how to install fonts on a PC. However, I highly recommend this font installing guide for PC users here on Wikihow.
- To install these fun cursive fonts on a Mac (since this is what I use, I feel more confident explaining this), follow my step-by-step instructions below:
- After your file has unzipped, you can open the individual folder of the font (there may not be one, it may just be the actual file, in which case, you won't have to open a folder). You can see in the image above what I mean.
- Double click the .ttf or .otf file (I prefer .otf. or Open Type Format files if they're available, they can be resized and manipulated without compromising quality. But, they're not always included in font downloads).
- After you have double clicked your .ttf or .otf file, a dialog box (pictured above) should automatically pop up for you.
- Click 'Install Font'. Your installation should begin automatically (it only takes a few seconds, total).
- Be sure to check your Mac's Font Book to make sure your just-installed font is in there (they're listed alphabetically). You should be able to start using your new font immediately in your computer's applications.
- If you can't find the font in your application for use, shut down all of your running applications and restart your computer. Relaunch your applications. Sometimes, fonts have a different preface before them, so if you still can't locate your font, be sure to check your download folder for its proper name.
Cursive Font Pairing Ideas
A lot of you have mentioned how much you have enjoyed the font pairing tips I've started adding to a lot of our recent free font posts. Since all of these are cursive fonts, I've paired them with some of my favorite print fonts. A good rule of thumb is to pair a pretty script font with something a bit on the cleaner side (like the san serif print fonts I have used below).
The above paired fonts are listed below for you to download and use:
- You are My Sunshine:
- "you are my": font used is Misses Regular (listed below for free download)
- "SUNSHINE": font used is Thin Skinned (this free font is available in my Free Skinny Fonts)
- Girls Just Want to Have Fun:
- "girls just want to": font used is Long Cool Woman (this free font is available as a part of the Long Cool Family Font in my Free Skinny Fonts)
- "have fun": font used is Funtastic (listed below for free download)
- It's a Good Day to Have a Good Day:
- "it's a good day to": font used is Silver Charm Regular (listed below for free download)
- "HAVE A GOOD DAY": font used is A Day Without Sun (this free font is available in my Free Skinny Fonts)
What Makes a Font Fun?
Obviously, it's pretty subjective whether a font is actually fun or not, but here are a few of the things I use to rate the fun factor of a font:
- I love it when the ascenders and descenders of letters are uncharacteristically larger or swirlier than the typical letter. That makes for a fun font.
- I feel a lot of interest (and fun!) is added when the weight of a stroke varies (often dramatically) in different parts of a letter or character.
- If a serif and san serif font marry to where there are short strokes at the end of some letters, but some don't have that feature...well, that's fun, y'all! Inconsistency is the perfect fun factor.
- Characters with decorative tails and swirls are everything in my book, at least where fun is concerned.
- If there are additional swashes and swirls in a font family, I'm totally sold on the fun aspect of that font.
