Our master bath makeover is finished. And we couldn't be more smitten with our bright and happy new space. We went from the 1970s to, well...a vintage version of a modern master bath. Check out all of the photos of the new space below.

We broke all the rules with our master bath remodel. Plates hanging in a bathroom? Sure, why not? Floor to ceiling drapes on a tiny window? Absolutely. Funky layout to remain intact? Of course. But, honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. We truly now have a master bath that reflects our tastes and personalities. See all of this fun below.

Master Bath Makeover

The tub area had a fairly dramatic transformation. More details on it below. 

But, hands down, the shower area is my favorite before and after. Adios to the green cave. In the photo above, you can see how we moved the existing overhead light actually into the shower now. We used a waterproof can light to make that work. It's made such a difference. Before, we were definitely showering in the dark...even with all of the lights on. You can see how our contractor also bumped out that overhead bulkhead that was over the shower. Although the actual square footage of the shower space didn't change, it feels enormous, by comparison.

Master Bath Layout 

Before I get too ahead of myself, let's back up to the "start of the bathroom". I mentioned this in the before post, but we actually love the layout of our master bath. It's super unique, but ridiculously functional. So, we kept the layout completely. 

• From our bedroom, there are two entrances (pictured above). When we initially looked at this house, I thought that was so weird to have two entrances...it seemed like a lot of wall space in the bedroom was going to entrance areas to the bathroom. However, after living here almost three years, I've come to realize how wonderful this layout is. 
• These two entrances are to two separate areas: my husband's dressing/vanity area and mine. 
• And each space has our closet off of the area (those are the doors pictured). He, literally, never has to even set foot in my space (in all of its product-laden glory that drives him bonkers). 
• There is a wall between the two dressing areas. 
• I'll go into more detail on paint colors in a post next month, but we actually kept the vanity areas the same color as our bedroom, since there aren't actual doors separating the spaces. The green color here is Geyser Steam from the HGTV Home line by Sherwin Williams at Lowe's.

My vanity area is on the right side of the space. I kept it fairly simple, decor wise. 

• I have an antique Chinoiserie print on the wall, along with two pieces left to me by my Aunt Margaret (the pitcher and basin and Linden alarm clock). 
• New hardware, counters, lighting, etc. have gone a long way to make this space so much nicer. Lowe's has a great selection of countertops and vanities here. 

My husband's side is a mirror image of my vanity area. 
I love how the coral pops through the doorway. 

I kept his vanity fairly tidy, too...just the essentials. 

Faucet Cleaning Tip

The new faucets are really pretty. If you're ever putting in new sinks and counters, be sure to have your contractor drill out for a single hole fixture and try to go with one of those. They are so much easier to clean. I found this out when we did this in our half bathroom a couple of years ago. We have super hard water and when our faucets are overly complicated, every smudge, smear and hard water stain shows on them. Having this single-lever faucet with one small hole into the countertop is a lot less cleaning. This is the Delta Linden Chrome faucet from Lowe's. We used the Linden line everywhere in the master bath.  

We used the Allen + Roth Grayson light fixtures in the vanity areas. I love how they have a slight zebra-like texture to them! The shades are actually a lovely milk glass...perfect for that vintage vibe I was going for. You can also see the enormous mirror selection here at Lowe's. 

The two vanity doorways lead straight into the heart of the master bath...where the tub, shower, and linen cabinets are located. I've been collecting plates for eons for this space...so happy to have them hung (see them in detail in this post)! The tile in here now matches the new shower perfectly (more on that below). And we, again, used Delta Linden faucets for the tub area. The paint in here is Classic Coral from Valspar at Lowe's. 

I made the corner the actual anchor point for the plates...I wanted them to kind of wrap onto both walls. I have a full tutorial on how I hung these here: How to Wirelessly Hang Plates.

I shared how my dad and I made this DIY Antique Knob Towel Holder here. All of the knobs we used on it were from my great grandmother's home.

And a lot of my plates were from family over the years, too. The beautiful Asian one on the bottom left was my late uncle's. It's the perfect Chinoiserie plate to me...I just love it. The one to the left of that (with the yellow border) was my grandmother's on my dad's side. Many of the others were collected at various thrift and antique stores over the years.  

The drapes in here are the same style (and fabric) that I made for our bedroom. The colors go perfectly with both the green in the bedroom and the coral in here. You can see their complete tutorial here. They're reversible!

I used a basic ball finial curtain rod in white from Lowe's to hang the drapes. The rings coordinated perfectly.

The cute chandy over the tub worked out perfectly. You can see in the before post here how our lighting has come leaps and bounds. We grabbed this six-light drum chandelier here at Lowe's. Initially, I was going to use it without the crystal pendants. But, the electrician went ahead and added them on before I could say anything...and I kind of like them, now. 

Of course, the real star of the space is the new shower. Our contractor, Steven, from Gill Construction Solutions in central Texas, really did a bang up job on this. We ran into a few snags along the way, but he came up with some really creative solutions that turned into cool features of the shower, in the end. 

Oh, and I have to point out how pretty the new glass door to the shower is. It's gone a long way to making this space feel so much larger. It's a frameless Kohler Shower Door from Lowe's. I highly recommend it. 

The entire shower is anchored onto a Schluter System. Our contractor loves this system and uses it often. You can see it here at Lowe's. It's definitely providing a lot of peace of mind, too...we've dealt with shower leaks in previous homes and we're happy that this system is in place to prevent that scenario.

It was fun to watch the daily progress of the shower...after the crew left every day, we'd sneak in and see the result. Above, our contractor Steven is setting tiles onto the Schluter System.

• The main tiles in the new shower are the American Olean Gloss White Tiles at Lowe's. 
• On the shower floor and on the back of the shower niche areas, we used these fun vintage-feeling penny tiles, also from Lowe's. Lowe's has a really extensive line of tile selections here. 

• One area where we ended up getting creative was the niche areas (and by we, I mean our contractor, Steven). Steven used the American Olean Chair Rail Tiles from Lowe's and built a frame for each of the niches. This turned out beautifully. 
• The reason we did this was to tie in the chair rail tile to the other spot we needed to use it in (pictured below). 
• You can also see how he used the penny tiles on the back of the niche areas to make them unique. 

As you can see, we used those penny tiles on the floor, too. But, the step into the shower (pictured above) was a bit odd in size, so the chair rail tiles were needed to make this space work. It was perfect to tie them into the niche areas, too...and turned out so pretty! A good contractor is worth their weight in gold, y'all. Steven really made our funky space work perfectly...and better than we imagined it could. If you're in central Texas, find him at Gill Construction Solutions.

We had become so accustomed to the 1970s soap dish that was a part of the green shower, that we were so happy to find one at Lowe's that matched our tile perfectly. So, that's two product niches and a soap dish. We have ample storage for sure. 

Another pretty Delta Linden faucet. We can use the outer water ring, the inner handle, or they both work simultaneously.  This thing is fantastic. You can find it here at Lowe's.

Across from the shower is the toilet room. Not a lot changed in here, but we did bid all of the 1970s wallpaper adieu, including in this space. I made the piece of artwork hanging in here several years back. You can see its tutorial here (I recently changed the colors of the lettering).   

We used simple Allen+Roth Chrome knobs on all of our cabinetry. You can see all of the cabinet hardware that Lowe's has here.  

I also added a couple of nesting tables by the tub for flowers, candles, towels, or magazines to flip through while in the tub. I'm thankful we decided not to rip out this tub, but just update its tile and finish. It's a long and comfortable tub and that old cast iron that you don't see as much anymore. It's also perfect for bathing the dog...with a person on each side of the tub, she can't escape! Yes, it's a two-person job to bathe our Dachshund (apparently).

Later this month, I'll be sharing more about the paint choices and how to tie in a master bedroom to a master bath...even when they're different colors! This is my favorite view that I get to see when I walk into our bedroom...a little glimpse into our new master bath. It's really such a happy space now.
