This Envelope Pom Pom Pillow is pretty much my favorite thing ever...the pom pom trim just makes it super happy! And this was actually really simple to make...just a little patience required. See the entire Envelope Pom Pom Pillow tutorial below.

Pom Pom Pillow
Last week, I shared our new blue velvet slipcover we put on our IKEA sectional. I got a great deal of questions and comments regarding the pillows that are are on each end of this sectional. I made an envelope pom pom pillow for each end of the sofa to bring out that fun blue (and add a bit of whimsy with the fun pom pom trim). Check out how to make your own envelope pom pom pillow below.

Blue Velvet Sofa Pillows
Sometimes I get excessive with throw pillows...to the point where people have asked if they're allowed to sit on our furniture (oops!). I've truly tried to scale back to make it not so "showy" and more "hey, sit here...it's cool". But, I can't not have any throw pillows, right?

Boho Fabric
I found this gorgeous fabric on my birthday trip to Fredericksburg, Texas. I pretty much cleaned off the bolt because I loved it that much. I knew my new couch cover would be that pretty royal blue color and the fact that it also brought in the aqua color that I already use in our home was a win win.

Envelope Pom Pom Pillow Tutorial Supplies

You will need to refer to my main envelope pillow tutorial for complete instructions. I have supplied the information on adding pom poms in today's tutorial, but the basic sewing guidelines can be found in this tutorial for an envelope pillow. It has a nifty size chart for creating envelope pillows in a variety of sizes.

Brother Sewing Machine

This is definitely a sewing machine project...I wouldn't recommend hand-sewing on this one. I use a really inexpensive sewing machine that is perfect for all levels. It was just over $100 at Amazon and has worked well for me for well over two years with no maintenance needed, whatsoever. It's easy to set up and get going straight out of the box. It's the Brother XR3774 Full-Featured Sewing and Quilting Machine, if you're in the market for a good work horse that doesn't break the budget.

Pom Pom Trim

Making Your Envelope Pom Pom Pillow

Again, follow my standard envelope pillow tutorial and stop before pinning the entire square together (so you'll have three pieces of fabric cut and two hems on the smaller rectangles in place). Lay your large square piece of fabric with the pretty side facing upwards on your workspace. Line your four pieces of pom pom trim along each side...with the pom poms facing the inside of the square (as pictured above).

Sewing with Pom Pom Trim
In order for your pom poms to lay nicely and not have two pom poms in one spot (especially on a prominent corner), you'll need to trim a pom pom or two off of one of your trim pieces on each corner, so it can all lie nicely on top of one another.

Pillow Trim
I like to lay the trimmed piece of trim on the bottom and then the intact piece of trim on top of it. Repeat this process on the other three corners (you can pin or clip your trim in place if you're worried about it shifting before you add your other fabric pieces on top).

Wonder Clips for Sewing
Lay one of your rectangles on top of the trim and the bottom square. Make sure the pretty side is facing towards the other pretty side of the square's fabric. This is the part that can be the most frustrating...but stick with it, you'll get there. You have to make sure the edge of your trim stays lined up again both edges of fabric. I kept a straight pin close by and would pull the trim to the edge with it, if I noticed it slipping a bit. I use my Wonder Clips to clip the entire thing in place (these are so much easier to work with than straight pins).

Sewing with Wonder Clips
Lay the other rectangle on top of the existing one (they will overlap their hemmed sides a bit...that's what creates the envelope opening). Then sew along the entire perimeter with a quarter inch seam allowance and using the basic stitch.

Clipping Corners
Be sure to clip each of your corners before turning your envelope pom pom pillow right side out. This will create nice, crisp corners on your pillow.

Easy Envelope Pillow
Turn your pillow cover right side out and gently poke out those corners with a pointy tool (be careful not to poke through your fabric...I often use the slanted side of an orange nail stick for this). Insert your pillow inside. Incidentally, I use

Bemz Ikea Cover
I'm so happy with how well this envelope pom pom pillow coordinates with my Bemz Slipcover for my IKEA Ektorp Sectional.
