I've used the GRATEFUL term in a lot of projects on here lately (did you grab my free GRATEFUL banner from last week here?). I'm working to instill an attitude of gratitude in our home year round...but of course fall seems to always focus on that a bit more with the Thanksgiving holiday. This Fall Hoop Art is perfect for beginners...it only has two stitches and they're both basic ones. See how I'm starting to incorporate a lil' bit of embroidery some mornings before starting the day.

I learned basic embroidery as a kid...but let a whole lot of time lapse after setting down my last hoop. Last year, at a blogging conference, I did something I usually never do: besides one class, all of the sessions I attended were creative, in nature (I usually pack my schedule with the business side of things, so this was totally out of my norm). My favorite class that I went to was taught by one of the most inspiring bloggers that I just adore: Beverly, from Flamingo Toes. Beverly's designs and methods really inspired me to take up this hobby after a 20+ year absence. I'm still definitely a novice (this is, literally, the first hoop art post I've shared with you). But, I'm really enjoying it. The Fall Hoop Art featured here today is my own design...but the banner on the design was inspired by a lot of Beverly's designs. I used a fall fabric and pretty fall embroidery floss on this one.

Even just spending a few minutes embroidering every morning kind of sets a nice, calm tone for my days (which can get a little hectic). And after a few days of embroidering every morning, I have a lovely creation to display.

What gets you inspired every day? Adventure? Creativity? Hoop art (woot, woot!)? Every morning, I have breakfast in my office and spend a few minutes just doing something non-work related. I wait until the family heads out the door, and I have a nice bit of quiet. It's the best time to get inspired for my day. A few minutes of embroidery, sketching designs for future graphics, or just quietness are what fuel me every day.

We were born to play, move, laugh, and to seek adventures both big and small. And while we're at it...let's live a full, flavorful life. Because, hey...we were Born to Shred, right?
My family loves Shredded Wheat. My dad always ate the larger biscuits every morning when I was growing up (the ones that only fit about two per bowl). I was always fascinated by this breakfast choice. Then I started having my own love for the "fun" versions with frosting. It's a great way to fuel your day.

Post® Shredded Wheat now has three new varieties to help fuel your day: Post® Shredded Wheat Frosted Mixed Berry, Post® Shredded Wheat Frosted Cinnamon Roll, and Post® Shredded Wheat Frosted S’mores Bites. My kids' favorite is definitely the S'mores Bites!

For this fall hoop art, you will need:

- one 8" embroidery hoop
- fall fabric (this is great to use up a scrap)
- double sided fusible webbing
- two colors of embroidery floss to coordinate with your fabric
- white fabric for your hoop
- embroidery needle
- erasable pen
- Fall Hoop Art pattern (below)
- one sheet of felt (not pictured)
- hot glue (not pictured)

Before loading your hoop with the white fabric, trace your design onto your fabric. I don't have a light table, but use a window in my sunroom that I tape my design on, lay the fabric on top of, and then trace.

Then follow the instructions on your fusible webbing to adhere scraps of fabric cut in triangles to the bunting line with your iron (I just do these free form to give it that handmade look).

You'll use the following stitches for this Fall Hoop Art:
A- Lazy Daisy Stitch at the ends of the banner
B- Backstitch for the banner's line to hang on
C- Backstitch for all of the lettering

I use one color of embroidery floss for the lettering and another for the banner (you can just use one on both elements, if you prefer). I like to start with the lettering, since it can get a little monotonous...kind of "get it done".

Then I do my stitch across the banner's top (right on top of the fabric...it's a nice extra way to secure it in place). Then, I do the two Lazy Daisy Stitches on each end of the banner...to look like they're holding the banner in place.

You'll finish the back (mine is always super messy) with the felt (after trimming and hot gluing the white fabric to the hoop). Trace an 8" circle onto your felt (my white fabric was fairly thick, but if you use thinner fabric, use white felt so it won't show through.

Only use your hot glue on the edges so it won't show through: glue the felt down to the back.

Turn it over and enjoy!

  1. This is so cute, Kristi! It has probably been more like 40 years since I did embroidery, but I definitely want to try my hand at this project. I am not making mine for Fall with Fall colors; but will be making mine in the colors of my craft room to leave up all year long....a reminder to be grateful is good any old time! Thank you for always sharing such sweet things!

    Warm hugs,
    Carol

  2. Very pretty, Kristi! I used to do a lot of embroidery work -- crewel, cross stitch etc, when I was younger. The cereal looked delicious!
