These burlap bags are everywhere these days...they're fantastic! And y'all, you can't beat the prices on them from burlapfabric.com. You can find the ones I grabbed above for less than a dollar a piece here.
These coordinate well with my free printable apple gift tags...especially when they're painted up! To give your burlap bags a quick makeover, slip a piece of cardboard inside the bag.
I used a simple stencil and my favorite chalk-style paint from Waverly in Crimson. Because chalk-style paint is thicker, it works well on burlap...there is minimal bleed.
I also used a good, stiff, stencil brush from Folk Art. This is one of those projects where you don't want to overload your brush too much. I usually dip it into paint and then blot it off a bit onto a napkin before applying to my project. I also used painting tape to seal the areas of the stencil that I didn't want paint on.
- I did both an apple stencil and a polka dot stencil on these.
- When applying the paint, it's best to pounce with a stencil brush.
- It's not a normal paint application...it's a dab/pounce situation.
I thought they turned out great!
But, I really think the polka dots are my favorite.
The coordinating tags are perfect with the bags...they make adorable back-to-school gifts for both teachers and students. You can either leave them square (for simple cutting), or use a punch to make them into cute circles. A 1.5" punch will remove the outer red area. But, a 2" punch will give you a small border (I used the 1.5" for all of the tags in this post). You can grab a 1.5" punch here on Amazon or the 2" punch here on Amazon.

The tags are designed for just a simple message.
I actually attached a couple of them on some of my bags so I could write a bit more.
Giving these for back-to-school gifts is the perfect way to tuck in a few supplies for teachers or school friends. I thought it would be fun to stick with the apple theme. I grabbed these cute apple supplies on Amazon here:
