How to Sew Reusable Wine Bags

We love gifting wine around the holidays...it's such an enjoyable gift for so many of our friends and family. I thought it would be fun to create a unique way to wrap our wine bottles this year...and a kitchen towel was the perfect fit! Check out my tutorial for sewing reusable wine bags below.

Festive and Reusable Wine Bags

Not only have I made these as gifts for others, I've sewn a few to use ourselves. While they're fabulous for gifting wine, they're great to use for easy kitchen storage bags, too (they clean up well in the washing machine making these a win-win). I use my resuable wine bags for leftover pieces of baguette loaves after a meal (they make great toast the next morning for my kids). I've even used these bags for pretzels or crackers after their original packaging falls apart on me (just add a clothespin to the top). You'll think of so many uses. But again, my favorite use is as a gift bag for a bottle of your favorite wine. 

And who wouldn't want to receive a fun wrapped up bottle of wine this season? I made these DIY Kitchen Towel Wine Bags for larger bottles of wine, but they can easily be adapted for a standard sized bottle, as well. But...hey, gifting a BIG bottle will put you a little higher up on the nice list, amiright?

How to Sew Reusable Wine Bags

The main tutorial below is for beginner sewers (honestly, if you've never even sewn before, you might be able to handle this super simple one). The beauty of using a kitchen towel is half of the seams are already sewn for you and there is minimal cutting. I included an option for using iron-on tape, if you prefer not to sew. That will make them less durable in the long run, but will certainly work in a pinch.

Supplies for Reusable Wine Bags:

• holiday print kitchen towels 
• I grabbed the ones in this post at my Ross Dress for Less, but I've listed other affordable ones out below.
• Be sure to look for a simple patterned towel, rather than one with wording or one focal point.
• Poinsettia Kitchen Towels on Amazon
• Red and Black Buffalo Check Kitchen Towels on Amazon
• Vintage-like Red and White Grainsack Towels on Amazon
• thread for sewing (your thread color won't matter too terribly much since all of your seams will be interior ones)
• straight pins or wonder clips
• measuring tape
• sewing scissors
• (not pictured) sewing machine
• decorative ribbon or pom pom trim to tie off your bag

Directions to Sew Your Reusable Wine Bags

• Start by measure the circumference of the largest part of your bottle. My bottles measured 12.5 inches around.
• Add an inch and a half for seam allowance (and wiggle room to shimmy the bag onto the bottle). So, my bag needed a circumference of 14 inches, total. 

Kitchen towels are PERFECT for this...you can actually get two per bag. Folding them in half, the height is just right for a wine bottle (and then your top seams are already done for you). I didn't do a fancy bottom to my bag...I wanted these to be simple (after all, they're gift wrap, right?).

• Fold your towel in half and cut a 7" piece while it is folded in half (the two 7" parts, when folded together and sewn will equal the 14" I want). I didn't use the finished sides of the towel...I cut those off. If you purchase towels with vertical lines, like I did, these will be even easier to cut. 
• Keeping the towel folded in half (inside out), pin or clip each of the sides (as pictured above). Again, no need to worry about the height since a towel is already the perfect length for this and your tops are done!

• Do a simple basic stitch up the two cut edges. 
• Remove your pins as you sew.
• Be sure to include about half of an inch of backstitching at the top and bottom to keep your stitch from unraveling. 

Optional No-Sew Tip: Use iron on tape in place of sewing seams up the sides. I like the Heat N Bond brand here on Amazon. 

• Turn your bag right side out.
• Press your bag with a hot iron.

• Slip your wine bottle inside of the bag. The bottle won't be completely covered at the neck...but I like the look of it peeking out (plus, it's the perfect way to carry it).

• Be sure to tie off the top of your bag with decorative ribbon or pom pom trim.
