DIY Vintage Football Sign

This DIY Football Sign was a fun craft to work on…just in time for football season. 

This is perfect for kids’ room decor, locker rooms, or at your football party.

I wanted to make a nice, neutral sign that could be used all throughout football season…a black and white one fit the bill perfectly. It can be out on display at a pizza party before the local high school game or even used as decor in one of my kiddo’s rooms. Check out how simple it was to put together below.

This started out as a 8'x12”x1” piece of lumber from the hardware store. I cut it into 12” sections, so I could make multiple signs. These would be perfect for gifts for coaches or teammates, too.

Gather your supplies…your board, two contrasting paint colors, sanding block (or sand paper, whichever you prefer), vinyl football shape (not pictured, I used my craft cutter to cut one, but you can purchase a pre-cut one at a craft store), and plenty of Bounty Paper Towels. Bounty is more absorbent, so the roll can last 50% longer. Once you finish your sign and have it on display at your football party, grab another roll of Bounty for the fun. Focus on the game, not the fumbles with 2x more absorbent Bounty at your side! Bounty paper towels are a must-have at your side throughout the football season.

I like to cover my work surface with Bounty paper towels, too. It makes for easy clean up when the project is over.

I like to start with my darker color…since it will actually be the shape’s color when all is said and done. Using chalk paint is a great idea, too. I sanded my board a lot to get a smooth finish, but the chalk paint will adhere really well to the board…when it comes time to pull off your vinyl, the chalk paint won’t peel up with it as so many acrylic paints can.

I honestly like to let my base color dry overnight before applying my vinyl football shape to the board. After the vinyl is down, I like to seal the edges with more of the base color…to prevent any paint bleeds.

After the “sealing paint” is dry, I use my lighter color to go over the entire piece. Then allow that to dry for a couple of hours, as well.

Thanks to the sealing technique, you should have super clean lines when you peel off the vinyl.

After the vinyl is removed, sand all the edges for a fun, vintage look. You can go as light or heavy on this step as you desire.

Remove all of your sanding dust with more Bounty paper towels. You can seal your piece with a clear, matte varnish, if desired.
