This Flourless Chocolate Orange Torte is our new go-to cake for celebrations.
It's made with only five ingredients: dark chocolate, eggs, butter, grated orange peel, and Young Living's Orange Essential Oil. And, it's a lot easier than you probably think.
This cake has my whole heart, y'all. It's kind of incredible. Very rich...but yet, I just can't stop myself from one more bite! The orange oil in it takes it to a whole new level of flavor nirvana. I love using essential oils in cooking and baking, and orange oil is definitely one of my favorites to use. The crisp citrus flavor is such a delicious addition to baked goodies...and so much more. This recipe seems like it would be difficult, but it's really not. There's quite a few steps, but nothing too intricate. The hardest part is wrapping up your spring form pan so water can't penetrate it...after that, it's easy peasy. If you try this, I'm dying to know what you think of it. We, truly, can't get enough of it.
I use my larger spring form pan, so this is enough to feed around 20 people (which is pretty much how I justify the amount of butter). If you have an 8-inch pan, I would only do 8 eggs, 16 ounces of chocolate, and 2 sticks of the butter.
Flourless Chocolate Orange Torte
Ingredients:
- 10 large eggs
- 20 ounces of dark chocolate chips
- 2 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, cut into pats
- 4 drops Young Living Orange Essential Oil
- 1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon grated orange peel, divided
- small pan of boiling water (can use a tea kettle)
- powdered sugar, optional

Directions:
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Thoroughly grease the sides and bottom of a 10-inch spring form pan. Using a large sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil, wrap the entire outside of the spring form pan, so no liquids can get in or out (you'll be using a water bath to bake the torte, so this is super important...but I promise it's the most complicated that this recipe gets). Set the wrapped spring form pan into a large lasagna or roasting pan (any baking pan that's large enough to hold the entire pan evenly).
Using a mixer with a whisk attachment (I just used my hand mixer since its beaters are whisks...you can use a large stand mixer if you prefer), beat the eggs on high speed for a full five minutes. You want to beat them for the full five minutes, so their volume completely doubles.
Using a double boiler over low to medium heat, melt the chocolate chips, butter, orange oil, and 1/4 cup grated orange peel together, stirring constantly. Stir until smooth and completely melted.
I like to use a large glass bowl for the top bowl of my double boiler so I can then add the eggs right to that bowl, without having to transfer the chocolate to another bowl.
Working carefully, mix the eggs into the chocolate about 1/2 cup at a time, being careful not to scramble the eggs as they go into the hot chocolate and butter. Mix until everything is fully incorporated.
Pour the batter into the spring form pan and smooth the top with a butter knife. Place the spring form pan (inside the roasting pan) into the oven. Pour the boiling water around the spring form pan in the roasting pan, forming a water bath around the spring form pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until the torte has set up completely.Take the spring form pan out of the bath and set on a rack to cool completely. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
Remove sides of spring form pan to serve. If you prefer, you can invert and then re invert (plate to plate) to remove the bottom of the pan. I honestly just serve it on the pan's bottom, since it barely shows. Top with additional grated orange peel and powdered sugar, if desired.
Store in the refrigerator.
This cake is rich and dense, but the perfect treat for a special occasion.
It's so much easier to make than it looks.
And I truly can't stop thinking about it after I make it (yeah, I may have a problem).
